This is true in the nonprofit world as much as in friendships \u2014 and for the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theidia.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute for Digital Inclusion Acceleration (IDIA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s an increasing priority.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Maricopa County, IDIA has formed strong partnerships with nonprofits such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cplc.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vsuw.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valley of the Sun United Way (VSUW)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ywca.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YWCA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fosteryourfuture.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster Your Future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each collaboration has strategically amplified efforts for digital inclusion and community support, and by joining forces these organizations have opened new avenues for thoughtful and targeted planning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ve accomplished more together than alone. Remarkably, with the help of these nonprofits and funding from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.asu.edu\/20220929-arizona-impact-346m-investment-asu-help-create-reliable-internet-access-and-training-region\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASU\u2019s Maricopa County Broadband Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, IDIA has been able to distribute nearly 7,000 devices to underserved families and individuals across the county \u2014 a striking figure over just a few short years. But device distribution is only the beginning, and the numbers alone don\u2019t capture the stories of each individual impacted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know that device distribution only addresses the access gap,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/erin-carr-jordan-ph-d-64082111\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Erin Carr-Jordan,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CEO of IDIA. \u201cMeaningful and safe use requires that every person who comes into contact with IDIA learns about and practices online safety, and begins building their digital skills. Once those foundational pieces are in place, people develop agency and are better positioned to fully participate in\u2014and benefit from\u2014being online. Partnering with CPLC has enabled IDIA to enter that circle of trust and support more families, particularly in areas where digital access is limited.<\/p><p>\u201cCPLC supports tens of thousands of people across the country through education, financial literacy, mental and physical health, skill building \u2014 you name it \u2014 and they\u2019ve been doing it for decades,\u201d said Dr. Erin Carr-Jordan. \u201cWe have deep respect for them and their model. Our first step was listening \u2014 seeking to truly understand what they do, how they do it, and what makes their approach so impactful. From there, the conversation naturally evolved into how we could add capacity and help fill gaps.\u201d<\/p><p>By combining CPLC\u2019s established community relationships with IDIA\u2019s digital inclusion expertise, the organizations have been able to meet critical needs more effectively, adding value to operations and expanding the impact for both groups.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89c785c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89c785c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Valley of the Sun United Way: Bridging literacy and technology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-562a88b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"562a88b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Valley of the Sun United Way (VSUW) has a long history of supporting literacy programs in Title I schools and community centers, so it was only natural that the two work together to support another layer of literacy \u2014 digital literacy. Coupling VSUW\u2019s existing programs with IDIA\u2019s expertise in digital skills building, the organizations have been able to multiply their impact.<\/p><p>\u201cVSUW already had incredible relationships and programs in place throughout Maricopa County,\u201d explains Carr-Jordan. \u201cThey are helping communities with foundational skills like reading and early literacy development, but they didn\u2019t yet have the capacity to address digital literacy. That\u2019s where we came in.\u201d<\/p><p>One event at a local elementary school illustrates how the power of working together is exponential. Through VSUW\u2019s connections, IDIA learned about an all-female robotics team from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sisepuedefoundation.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Si Se Puede Foundation<\/a>, a nonprofit STEM program. Despite being national champions, the team lacked access to the digital devices that would be helpful for their learning and robotics work. IDIA was able to provide devices and training so the team could get up to speed on technology and continue to excel.<\/p><p>That same event also included a \u201ctrain the trainer\u201d workshop on online safety, designed to support local nonprofit leaders in extending digital safety guidance to the communities they serve.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tasha-j-reeves-6b389464\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tash\u00e1 Reeves<\/a>, founder and executive director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wearewomenwithpurpose.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Women With Purpose, Inc.<\/a>, participated in the session.<\/p><p>\u201cParticipating in the \u2018train the trainer\u2019 session for online safety&#8230; was incredibly impactful for us,\u201d Reeves says. \u201cAt Women With Purpose, Inc., we are committed to equipping single mothers with the tools they need to thrive, and digital literacy and online safety are essential components of that mission. This experience not only strengthened our capacity as an organization but also positioned us to extend critical knowledge to the women and children we serve.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bb5061b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bb5061b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">YWCA: A centuries-long dedication to women and families\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-73252db elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"73252db\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>YWCA and IDIA share a lot in common, but they were especially drawn by their mutual commitment to community support. By joining forces, the organizations have created pathways to digital inclusion for a wide range of people, especially women, seniors, and families.<\/p><p>Through YWCA, IDIA has hosted a series of events and workshops to not only provide devices but also ensure recipients receive the training they need to safely navigate the online world. This includes, for example, protecting private information, setting strong passwords, avoiding phishing scams, and even accessing telehealth \u2014 all critical steps in building digital skills.<\/p><p>The goal is to help people receive the training they need on digital device use, an increasingly essential part of everyday life.<\/p><p>\u201cOftentimes the communities we work with are marginalized. They kind of just get passed over,\u201d says Dr.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/annissa-furr-ph-d-95594543\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Annissa Furr<\/a>, head of research and learning at IDIA. \u201cThey never feel like they&#8217;re quite up to speed with the technology. Our goal is really to just bring devices (and support) to individuals in Maricopa County that don&#8217;t have the ability to get it for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28de80d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"28de80d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Foster Your Future: Building independence and life skills\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-270be65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"270be65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Foster Your Future supports young adults with experience in foster care\u2014many of whom are navigating school, work, and new responsibilities. Through a connection made by Valley of the Sun United Way, the organization partnered with IDIA to expand that support through access to digital tools. Together, they distributed 25 devices to young adults in the program, many of whom are enrolled in school, applying for jobs, or working with mentors to build life skills.<\/p><p>\u201cWe have a number of young people who&#8217;ve already said that they&#8217;re doing [schoolwork] with theirs,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jennifer-doran-pe%C3%B1a-6329b23\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Doran-Pe\u00f1a<\/a>, Chief Operating Officer of Foster Your Future. \u201cSome of them are applying for jobs, or doing other things&#8230; They&#8217;re using it to help them with their budgeting and their financial literacy, one-on-one with their mentors.\u201d<\/p><p>The devices have also provided an opportunity for conversations around digital safety, which is especially important for young adults at higher risk for identity theft or misinformation online. With guidance from IDIA, mentors are helping young parents set up parental controls, protect private information, and understand what it means to have a digital presence.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ce1a0cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ce1a0cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Partnerships as the foundation for inclusion <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-69813ed elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"69813ed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For IDIA, partnerships like those with CPLC, VSUW, YWCA, and Foster Your Future are key to multiplying outreach efforts in Maricopa County. By working alongside trusted organizations, IDIA can focus on creating long-term solutions that enable better outcomes for individuals and communities.<\/p><p>\u201cThere is no shortage of people who are in need,\u201d says Dr. Carr-Jordan. \u201cIt\u2019s a matter of identifying the right partners. It\u2019s about co-creating with folks who trust you because you show up and did what you said you would do.
